Quilt As You Go

In preparing to do a quilt as you go procedure, there are many steps you need to do to prepare to sew your quilt. All the blocks need to be exactly the same sizes, strips are needed for each of the sections and each strip needs to be pressed.

The strips need to be pinned with the right sides together and all the blocks of the quilt need to be lined up and sewn together. All this is done step by step with a lot of hand sewing, which can be time consuming, but seems to work for a lot of people who try it.

Quilt as you go is a method that is best when making big quilts because it eliminates the difficulty of trying to sew these big quilts on sewing machines. It is very difficult to try to maneuver the quilts on the sewing machines.

With this method, each block of the quilt is prepared by hand before sewing it all together. The number of blocks you need depends on the size of the quilt you intend to make.

A suggestion when you are doing a quilt as you go is to be consistent and use the same type of block for the whole quilt. Using scraps from previous quilts is also suggested.

If all the blocks are not quite sewn to match exactly, you have the ability to use a zigzag stitch on the sewing machine, which allows for some room to make mistakes. This leeway can be a good thing for those just starting out with quilting as you go.
