Quilting has existed from the beginning of time. Mothers would cut up their family's worn-out clothes into small squares and hand-sew them together into quilts for warmth and art. They also had a sentimental value to them. In the beginning the material was not that important; they used what they had. Now quilting has turned into an art form and the quilters have banded together to have quilting competitions and to preserve their art.
There are quilting retail establishments that have the best quality cotton fabrics, as well as other materials for modern quilters. They also carry reproduced vintage fabrics that give you an old world look. They carry patterns from old famous quilts to the newer ideas of modern times. Usually the proprietors are quilters themselves and are there to help you in every way. They will conduct classes to help the veteran quilter get better, as well as teach the novice how to quilt. They also carry all the equipment you would have to have to do a quilt, including the new quilt sewing machines.
The fabric retail stores are a good way to buy quilting material. They have good quality material as well as all the equipment needed. They can't help you if you need help, but they will probably send you in the right direction. And then there are the large discount stores like Walmart that carry only some quilting material and equipment, but are cheaper. There is somewhere to go to buy quilting material for everyone.
