Quilt As You Go Method of Quilting

Quilt-as-you-go is a quick quilting technique used to complete blocks. Some quilters prefer this method of quilt production because it makes it easier to create a reversible quilt. Individually quilted blocks are sewn together and bound to create a reversible quilt. This kind of quilting is generally completed by machine, although there may be some decorative handwork. Quite simply, each block is treated as a whole quilt using the quilt-as-you-go method.

There are patterns for quilting blocks with a different design on each side. Batting forms the middle layer of each block. In order to stitch all of the way through three layers, a sewing machine with a quilting needle or walking foot is used. Many quilters have found that a 2.5 length stitch helps prevent puckering as blocks are joined. Experienced quilters use this method of quilting for smaller projects to avoid pushing too much bulk through the machine. Some quilters prefer to complete two, three, four squares at one time and make a strip. Still others complete all of the squares before connecting any. Quilters agree that the material between squares can be quilted or left plain to show off the quilted design. It really depends on the intricacy you prefer for your quilt.

Quilters agree that keeping seams and blocks ironed helps maintain smoothness while adding precision and quality to your work. Many quilters sew a two-inch sash around each block and this method of quilting makes for excellent use of scraps. One side can be primarily a pastel color and the other side can be made using warmer hues. One side may also sport a calmer pattern than the other. After choosing your patterns, you should start collecting little pieces of scrap that will eventually come together to make a quilt to be proud of.
