Women have enjoyed quilt making for hundreds of years and most regular quilters believe it to be a very relaxing hobby. Others enjoy quilting because it can be a fun social activity. Whatever your reason for quilting, the quilts you produce are there for the whole world to see.
One of the most common techniques involved in quilting is called piecing. There are several types of piecing that quilters use, the most popular being the English Piecing method. English Piecing is used to create very intricate quilt patterns. Quilts that have many small pieces need to be placed together just right in order for the quilt to turn out correctly.
All you will need to do your own English Piecing is paper and the fabric you will be using for your quilt. Cut out your quilt block from a piece of paper and then from the fabric of your choice. Keep in mind that the fabric will have seam allowances added. You will then center your paper pattern on your fabric piece so you can get the corners and block perfectly fitted. Next, you will press the piece and continue to the second and third. Once you get started piecing, you can either hand sew the pieces or use a sewing machine.
Paper Piecing is another name used for English Piecing. When performing paper piecing, the paper serves as a template for your quilt piece.
There are several other techniques available to help you to piece your quilt together. If you are sewing a simple quilt, you might want to use chain quilting. Chain quilting involves sewing your blocks together one after another, without cutting the thread or pressing them until you have all of the like blocks put together. This is a very popular method used for creating a pattern where the blocks are all the same shape and size.
