Tools for Quilting

One of the most important items to learn when you start to make a quilt is the difference in fabric. Always remember to use the same kind of fabric for your entire quilt. If you use cotton, then the back of the quilt and the batting for the quilt should also be made from cotton. You should have a basic book on quilting near you to answer any questions that you may have as you make your quilt. The book will save you many hours of work. It will contain all the terms that people use when making a quilt.

All quilts are made with a quarter inch seam allowance. You should mark this on your sewing machine so that you will know where to sew each seam. When you make clothes ,the seams are all five eights. You should get used to seeing the difference.

If you want to learn to cut your pieces faster, then you should have a rotary cutter. These are easy to use but take some practice. You will need a cutting mat, as well as a rotary cutter. You should practice cutting before you start cutting your pieces. Remember that the rotary cutter is very sharp and you should always cut away from you.

Strip piecing is a good way to begin quilting. You will just need some fabric and then cut strips to sew together. With this method you can sew any number of pieces together to make your quilting go faster.

One thing you might want to use is a color wheel. This will allow you to match your fabric for a better visual effect. You will need colored threads to match your fabric when you sew. A pair of scissors that you only use to cut fabric is necessary.
