Materials for the Quilter

If any of these names, Sun Bonnet Sue, Nine Patch, Log Cabin, Shoo Fly, Double Wedding Band, Wedding Bouquet, Ohio Star, Irish Chain, are familiar, then you must be a quilter or aspiring to join the crowd. These and many more are the names of quilt blocks. Maybe you have a favorite that you absolutely must work into a beautiful quilt. Before you get started, there are quilting materials and tools to add to your arsenal of sewing supplies.

Even if you love to hand stitch, a sewing machine will facilitate the process and make completing the project faster. There are so many brands from which to choose: Elna, Brother, Janome, Pfaff and others. If you are already a sewer, scissors, pins, needles, thread, iron, ironing board, seam ripper, yardstick, and ruler are probably already on hand. Specialty items made just for quilting will make life easier. A rotary cutter, rotary cutting mat and rotary ruler are must haves for the serious quilter. Some quilters like to use a quilting hoop or frame.

For hand sewing, quilt hand-sewing needles work best. Never use the scissors you cut fabric with to cut paper. Extra long straight pins work better on quilts than regular straight pins. Large safety pins work well for holding pieces together during the finishing process. A cork board design wall is a useful tool. Use good quality 100% cotton fabric for your projects. Advanced quilters might venture into the use of fancy fabrics such as velvet, satin and others. Visit your favorite quilt shop for pattern and instructions, and embark on your creative journey.
