A Trip to the Past

Quilting-as-you-go is a quick and fun method of finishing a quilt in a much quicker time period than ordinary quilting. It is also a method used when families had to move in the early years. Quilts were always needed for warmth so quilt-as-you-go was created. When piecing the ordinary quilt, the top is made separately and then the top, the middle which is batting of a soft material, and a back is put together and placed on a quilting frame. The quilt can be hand quilted or machine quilted.

In Quilt-as-you-go, the quilting is done a block at a time. There are many patterns to follow. In the log cabin pattern, strips are cut and then sewn on the batting and the back. After having picked a pattern, fabric has to be cut in lengths needed to provide the correct size of the finished block. The exact method of sewing depends on the pattern chosen. The desired arrangement is decided upon and the sewing of the pieces begins.

To get the finished block that is already quilted the center of the block might need to be found. This step is one followed for a center log cabin that is built in a circle around the block. Another pattern will start at the edge of the block.

Whatever the pattern, the sewing begins with attaching the first strip to the batting and back. Adding strips or blocks until the block is finished is done until all blocks are finished. Most times an extra strip is sewn to the finished block to provide a way of sewing the finished blocks together. After all the blocks are made, sewing the strips together is the next step. After all the blocks are together, adding a border hem is the final step.
