Using Different Quilting Materials

Like any other handmade craft, the greatest part of your creation is to be able to show off your imagination and creativity. That was the original intent of the first quilts. Way back in the day, a quilt was made as a blanket for keeping warm. However, it was also a very creative way to use up scraps of materials left after making clothing articles.

It always used to be the standard to have all of the fabric of the same quality and type, such as all cottons, or all polyesters. That has all changed now. Sometimes the more you let your imagination roll, the better the quilt. It is very easy to start a basic pattern using the same types of fabrics, but as you look at the design you are creating, don’t hesitate to put pieces of velour, satins, or even lace overlaid fabrics. These accents can give your quilt a most exquisite look, as well as being unique.

If you are looking to do a quilt for a child, don’t hesitate to use pieces cut from different fleece designs to keep it warm and cuddly. Or, maybe you are giving your quilt to someone with very exquisite taste and you want it a bit more special than the norm. If that’s the case, you can plan your entire quilt around different pieces and colors of satins, lace overlays, silks, or even embroideries. Your quilt can be very stylish without being gaudy. With the fancier fabrics, you might even consider tacking your quilt with thin ribbon and tying it into tiny bows, rather than a typical heavy thread and just a knot.
