Batting for Quilts

There are several different kinds of batting you can purchase for your quilts. Cotton batting, used by quilters for years is still some peoples' favorite, it lays flatter for the traditional looking quilts. Poly batting is being used more now than any other batting, because it is less expensive. Also it doesn't shrink and is light weight and easy to handle while sewing.

For the environmentalist there is Dream Green Batting, it is made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Ten plastic bottles are used for each pound of Dream Green batting made. This keeps those plastic bottles out of land fills. It is also very easy to sew with, your needles will glide right through it. It is also washable and has little or no shrinkage.

Dream Angel batting is made from flame retardant micro fibers with no chemical additives. This is a very soft batting, it is a good batting to use on babies and children's quilts. It is also very nice for wearing apparel, like robes and jackets.

Wool Batting is used mostly for hand quilting, although you can machine quilt with it also. It is a warmer batting than poly or cotton, therefore is preferred by northern quilters. Vintage quilters still like to use wool batting over synthetic.

Bonded silk batting is very new on the market. It is made of ninety percent silk and ten percent polyester. The polyester is to hold the silk fibers together. It can be used with any type of quilting fabric. It is beautiful in texture and can be used as the backing on baby quilts, lap quilts and many other projects. It also can be used in home decor, for pillows, window treatments and coverlets. This is probably going to end up being the most versatile batting every produced.
