Tips For The Beginning Quilter

Are you ready to create your quilt? Quilting can be wonderful but also overwhelming. With just a few tips you can start to begin making your own quilt.

One of the most important tips is understanding the fabric you are choosing for your quilt. There are many fabrics to choose from, but some are difficult to handle and may require different washing requirements. Is this a blanket that you will use and will want to wash, or is it more decorative and washing the fabric is not a priority? If you take some time to figure out which fabrics you are most comfortable with and what they require, it will help the look of your quilt and the finished product. Another tip is to leave some seam allowance when sewing. This not only allows for mistakes but will help in preventing fraying or loosening of stitches. Leaving a healthy seam allowance also will make it easier to press which also will lead to a cleaner look to your quilt.

When you are quilting, precision in alignment of the squares is extremely important so it is key to iron your seams regularly. Pressed fabric will help in the accuracy as it helps the squares fit together better. Finally if you choose to use a rotary cutter, it is important to stand while cutting as it enables you to see that the blade is securely against the straight edge. When sitting you are looking from an angle that does not ensure proper cutting. Also cutting with a rotary cutter at an angle can get your fingers sliced. Standing will provide even pressure as you move the blade along the edge. Try these tips when you are quilting and see if they help make a difference.
