Social Quilting

Being part of a quilting or a quilting bee was a way to interact and socialize with your neighbors. There was a time that all women stayed at home and didn't work outside their home. There was little money back then and people in the small communities bonded together to help one another. The women would gather together and sew pieces of material together to make quilts. This would become a social interaction time for the women to talk and share. Each home that hosted a quilting bee would need to have a quilting frame. This was made from lumber and was not a small piece of furniture to store. Some houses were larger and were able to let the frame setup for the weekly quilting bees. Other smaller homes would have to move furniture to assemble the frame. And some if they had high enough ceilings would make a rope and pulley system to lower and raise the frame. This gave the women a common project to work on. They talked and of course they would have eats. Some would quilt while others cooked. This was one of the best ways for the earlier pioneer women to socialize. Not only was this an opportunity for interaction, it was a bonding experience for those who participated.

Today quilting bees are still a wonderful way for women to socialize. Some churches today still have the quilting bees. This gives people with like interests an opportunity to come together and share ideas and create something colorful and beautiful.
