Hopping for Quilts

Creating unique quilts begins with finding just the right combination of materials worthy of your efforts. Hunting for shops that might carry what you are looking for is an adventure. As you look for the right combination, touch is part of the experience. This is when shop hopping comes into the quest but with the expense of gas traveling often needs to be kept to a minimum.

Define the purpose of your latest creation as well as the colors and effect you desire to achieve before you begin your quest. Your first stop is you own scrap bag. Is there anything there that can be part of your newest creation? Next, off to the internet. Is there a theme that you desire to carry over? Animal prints, folk art, vintage, pop art and color can be sought after. eBay is a great source for some materials as long as you are careful about the shipping charge being added to your bid. This also keeps your travel expense down and allows you to shop hop all over the country.

Finally, the traveling shop hopping trip. The chain stores, Walmart and Joann’s are two favorites, but other specialty stores are worth the effort to seek out. Don’t forget to include thrift shops because you never know when someone else is clearing out their stash of fabric. Make sure you pick up enough batting and thread for your project because you don’t want to make a second trip.

Quilting is a joy and challenge. Finding different fabric to mix and match is a great challenge. Seeking out the treasures to create your heirloom is worth the shop hopping effort because each quilt is unique.
