Quilting, like any craft, takes a few basic tools. While you would be able to quilt without them, they certainly make the task easier and the finished product more sturdy and professional looking. Pioneers used to make quilts sewing everything together by hand. However, we are not pioneers anymore, and a basic sewing machine will make the job go much faster and be more precise.
Cutting tools are another item that will help make your hobby less frustrating. Paper scissors and fabric scissors are two different styles of scissors that you will need. Save your fabric scissors only for fabric and they will stay sharp and give you a clean cut. Rotary cutters, mats and rulers all will help make the task of cutting your fabric easier and more efficient. Rotary cutters have a sharp wheel which you run over the fabric. Use a rotary mat to cut on and it will save any surface you are trying to cut on. Many rotary mats are self-healing, which means any cuts from the rotary cutter will eventually fill themselves in. Finally, a rotary ruler is a clear ruler that you can run your cutter against to ensure that you get straight edges and perfectly measured pieces.
The other basic tools that you will need are cotton thread to sew with, short quilting needles for any hand quilting you may want to do, and pins. When you have finished sewing the quilt top together, you need to pin the quilt top, batting, and backing together to hold everything in place while you do the final quilting through all three pieces. These are just the basic tools you might want for quilting. There are many other tools you can buy which aren’t necessary but make the art of quilting easier.
