Quilting Terminology

Quilting is where you sew by hand or machine a bunch of squares or blocks to make a big blanket. Each square is made individually, and then the finished squares are put together. Typical quilting is done with three layers. The top fabric is called the quilt top, the batting that is an insulating material is in the middle, then the backing material goes on the bottom. The quilter’s hand passes the needle through the material then goes back up. This can be done by hand or machine. This process is repeated until you have gone completely across.

The belief is that quilting started out for the necessity of warmth rather than decoration. Quilts could also be used as a cover for the opening in the wagon to keep wind and rain out. Quilts from the past and present can tell a story of one's life. Many times the material that was used came from old clothing or other things that held sentimental value.

“Quilt as you go” came about back when the pioneers were going west and the ladies would piece together 12” blocks. All three layers completed the square, then the quilters moved on to the next one. They could not fit the quilting frame into the covered wagon.

Foundation piercing, sometimes called paper piecing, is where you sew pieces of material together on a temporary or permanent foundation. Then, you create a design in the foundation by making a series of holes in the paper.

Piecing means sewing cut pieces of material together using a machine or by hand to make blocks for the quilt. Quilting is placed on many different things, such as bedspreads, quilts, baby blankets, wall hangings, clothing, and on several textile products.
