Shopping for Quilting Material

Shopping for material for your next quilting project is one of the fun aspects of quilting as a hobby. There are literally hundreds of on-line shops on the web where you can choose your fabric without even leaving your home. You can also shop at large discount craft stores which will have a nice selection of material at a cheaper price. Quilting is such a popular hobby that most areas have specialty quilting shops that sell unique and specialty fabrics you can choose from. The specialty shops tend to be the most expensive but most have regular sales. If you wait for a sale, you can usually stock up on fabric for several projects and still save money.

Before you can shop for fabric, you need to know which pattern you want to follow for your quilt. If your pattern has lots of smaller sized pieces in it, you need to select a fabric that has a small print. If you try to cut fabric with larger prints into smaller pieces, you will lose the integrity of the fabric and completely change the look of your quilt. However, if your quilt pattern has larger pieces in the blocks or thick borders you can choose from a wider range of patterns.

What the fabric is made of is also an important consideration when trying to make a quilt. You want to pick a fabric made of material that has some give to it, but won’t stretch out of shape as you try to sew with it. Cotton or a cotton blend is always a good choice to quilt with but you can experiment with other materials as well. If you go to a specialty quilting shop, the owners can generally help you narrow down your choices if you get overwhelmed.
