Tools for Quilting

The two most widely used methods of quilting today are hand sewing or using a sewing machine. When quilting you need to have the correct tools on hand to make your quilting experience more enjoyable. When you quilt with the conventional method of hand stitching, you will need to purchase special needles. You also will want to use special thread that is used just for quilting.

Along with normal fabric shears you may want to purchase a rotary cutting tool. It's a rolling razor blade made of high quality carbide. This is used over what is called a self healing mat. This mat has a plastic surface that once cut upon will squeeze itself back together. Of course you will need a tape measure for all that fabric and beautiful patterns you will be creating. Safety pins will come in handy and there are special curved safety pins to help when pinning the fabrics together. Straight pins are used to hold material together before sewing and they make extra long pins with ball heads that are easier to work with. You may want to invest in marking pens or pencils to mark your fabric.

If you are going to use a sewing machine you will want to have an even feed foot or what is called a walking foot. This is to help prevent puckered stitches when you are sewing the two fabrics together. Your sewing machine will also need special needles made for quilting. There is an endless supply of tools you can buy for quilting.
