Quilting Basics

The basics of quilting are sewing, cutting, and pressing.

A quilt sandwich is the three layers of a quilt. A quilt top is when all your blocks are sewn together in horizontal and vertical rows, then you add the border. Batting makes your quilt fluffy and gives it a cozy feeling. Backing is the bottom layer that covers the batting and finishes putting the sandwich together to make your quilt. For small quilts, you will only need one piece of material, but larger quilts will need two pieces of material sewn together.

When you have the three layers of the quilt together, you will want to start basting them so that they do not move or bunch up when you are ready to sew them together. Basting is where your stitches are much longer than regular stitches you use to sew things together with. You want to be sure to baste your quilt to make sure you end up with a beautiful quilt.

The blankets and quilts you buy in the stores are not made with loving hands and a loving heart like the ones you sew at home. There are many different kinds of quilts, and you can make many different sizes.
Quilts can be made from old clothing that you do not want any more. Lots of children's quilts are made from things that were special to them.

If you have never quilted before, you might want to take a class or even read up on the subject.
