Since the resurgence of quilting popularity, it is easier than ever to find any materials you would like to incorporate in your quilt. There are solids and prints of every description. Fabric of any weight can be purchased. Larger arts and crafts shops have hundreds of bolts of fabric at your finger tips. The Internet is a great place to find bargains on material. If you are looking for reproductions of period prints or colors, you can find it on-line.
Many quilters enjoy mixing and matching textures, colors and prints themselves. For those new to quilting, fat quarters are found with ease. These prepackaged fat quarters have fabrics that have already been coordinated for you. With some research you can find cotton fabrics from different countries that are thicker than American cotton. Polyester fabrics were used for a period in the 1970s but the stretchy material was hard to sew except in very simple patterns and the double knits made heavy quilts destined to never wear out. For these reasons, blends are better for quilting.
Vintage fabrics can be found at yard sales and in consignment shops. Thrift stores are also a good resource for materials suitable for quilting. Old wedding gowns and prom dresses can supply special touches. Velvets and satins can liven up a quilt. You should be able to locate flat and brushed cottons as well as flannels. Check the remnant bins in the fabric department of stores. You may find that special color or patriotic pattern. If you are looking for themed and designer fabrics, laces and trimmings, they are out there waiting for you.
