With so many quilts being made by machine, it adds quite a bit of personal touch to hand sew your quilt. There are several things you can do in order to make hand stitching your quilt a snap. The proper materials make an enormous difference when it comes to hand sewing a quilt. Loosely woven fabrics are not suitable because they pull apart and do not wear well. Heavy fabrics are very difficult to push through and can cause major problems when stitching is involved. A good fabric to select is of medium weight and cotton. Choosing a proper batting is important as well. Sometimes batting is too dense, making it difficult to pull the needle through. Try using different battings and find which works the best for you. Before you get to stitching, it is important to secure the three layers in a “sandwich.” This should be done by basting and using a hoop. Basting should be done with white thread only and the hoop should be about 11” to 18” in diameter. This should reduce the risk of the fabric bunching and becoming misaligned. Quilting needles tend to be short and quilting thread is usually glossed to pass through the quilt’s layers easily. There are several different types of stitches that can be used while quilting, the most popular being the rocking stitch. By keeping these things in mind, it should be fairly easy to personally stitch your next quilt. Hand stitching quilts can give the quilt a touch of love and individuality. |
