Quilting beginners often feel a little overwhelmed when they sit down to take care of their quilting. They may have a picture in their minds of how they want their finished piece to look, but aren't sure how to get there. They also may feel like they don't have the sewing skills needed to make a great quilt. Actually, like all skills, quilting is merely a matter of practice and of knowing some techniques to work on. There are a number of ways to go about doing your stitching. Which style is right for your project will depend upon the fabric that you have selected and the type of quilt that you are making. One method of quilting is called "Quilt in the Ditch." This means that you are going to stitch in the seam line of the block, which will hide the stitches in the construction of the block. But, this isn't always a good choice for quilters. Sometimes it is better to use your stitching in a more embroidery-style. For instance, if you have a fabric that has big, bold patterns, you might consider stitching around the motif. This type of quilting is called "Motif quilting," and is used to trace out designs that are already created in your fabric. There are numerous ways to make your quilt stand out. The variety of techniques is a part of why quilts are such unique and beautiful pieces of artwork. Just keep at it and your quilts will soon shine, no matter what quilting style you feel most comfortable with. |
