Getting the Right Stuff

Quilting is not as daunting as you may think. If you can manage to sew on your buttons or mend a hem, you can learn to quilt. Of course, as with any new hobby, selecting your materials will determine the quality of your finished project. It’s best to start with simple patterns and quality material for your entire quilt. Don’t forget that besides the top of your quilt you will need batting for the center section and a backing for the completed quilt.

Many communities have quilting shops as well as the chain fabric stores and discount stores. Materials can even be found in craft stores. But if you are just beginning to quilt, you will find the quilting shops to be the best resources for getting started. They can direct you to the correct fabrics for the type of quilt that you are making. It is important that the fabrics be easy to work with and color fast if your quilt will be repeatedly laundered.

Batting materials are usually polyester, cotton, or wool. The material you choose will give your quilt the heft you desire. Of course, there is a big difference in pricing between these materials, with wool being the most expensive. Your budget will need to factor into your selection.

The backing finishes off your quilt and once again your material selection can greatly affect the look of your finished quilt. White cotton is a favorite among quilters, as are small prints in colors that complement your quilt block.

Your local quilting shop will probably offer classes that would be helpful to take. There are also numerous books on quilting and online resources for quilting. You could be happily stitching away in no time.
