Needles, Needles, Needles

Let's begin by saying this; the choice of a needle is a distinctively individual matter. So, please take the following article with a grain of salt. There will be those who find this article extremely beneficial and those who will simply enjoy the fact that knowledge is being shared. Some of us have toughened up and strengthened our hands; others of us have distinctly small and soft hands, which will play its role in needle behavior.

There are several ways to think about needles and testing them will be much easier if we think about them in the following ways.

Rigidity is important because it allows you to gauge whether the needle is stiff enough to handle the force you are putting behind it.

How flexible is the needle? Will it break when you push it or will it go with the flow?

Durability is another issue. It may be rigid and flexible when purchased, but how will it hold up in the long run and how often will you need to replace it?

Does the needle glide through the fabric like a hot knife through butter?

These are all things that must be considered when purchasing your quilting needles, especially if you do more hand stitching than machine stitching. Many people still choose to do most of the stitching by hand. Machines are really great, no one is trying to imply that they aren't, but those of us who have been quilting for some time know that the most beautiful, durable and "hand-crafted" feel comes from hand stitching.

You are free to choose your own needles, as stated take this article with a grain of salt. Although, any needle will do if you have the itch to quilt and need to scratch. It does become quite an addiction.
