Some people scrapbook, others take photos and others still, quilt. These are all ways to preserve our memories and none are quite as much fun as creating T-Shirt quilts. These beautiful quilts can be a way to immortalize your children as they grow, taking pieces of favorite outfits, outgrown sports jerseys or their costume from a school play or all of it can be used. Here is an easy to follow, step-by-step for creating a T-Shirt quilt of your own. What you'll need: Pins Rotary cutters Sewing needles Threads Quilting needles Fabric for backing Quilt frame Scissors Fabrics Sewing machine Rulers Batting Irons First, you must decide how large you want your quilt to be. All the pieces of fabric that you want to use should then be laid out to scale and coordinate how best they will fit together. Feel free to make adjustments by cutting them to fit. (Tip: you can add a 2 1/2 in. boarder around the largest item and use that as a guide for how many pieces will fit together.) Then, apply a fusible, non-stretching interface under the fabric pieces to ensure that the edges will not curl. Leave 2 inches of interface sticking out from each piece. You should be able to see the quilt coming together already. If you are more advanced, you don't need the fabric to be cut in squares, but for the novice quilter, it should be. Begin sewing one square (or piece) to the next, creating rows until all the pieces have been sewn together. Once the rows have been sewn together, you may add boarders made of flannel or woven cotton. At this point you will want to sew the backing; you may even have enough "memory" material to do both sides. Now fill the quilt with the batting and finish by sewing or tying. And there you have your T-Shirt keepsake quilt. |
