The Patchwork Quilt

Patchwork quilts are the most common type of quilts, but they are often mistaken for other kinds of quilts due to certain similarities. A true patchwork quilt is made of pieces of mismatched fabric, but today’s patchwork quilts are usually color coordinated and well thought out.

Technically, a patchwork quilt is a quilt made up of a top layer that is essentially various pieces of fabric sewn together. In most cases, the quilting that surrounds the center design does not match the top layer, but sometimes this can be the case. Historically speaking, the patchwork quilt was a way for American pioneer women to use up old pieces of fabric, while making a warm blanket for their family. Eventually, the practice of creating a patchwork quilt became quite popular, and small towns began to hold quilting bees. Soon, patchwork became a sort of competition, and today’s patchwork quilts can sell for hundreds of dollars.

Although patchwork did not start off as a high priced item, patchwork quilts certainly take a lot of time to complete, which is why they are so expensive. If you want to make your own patchwork quilt, start with some pieces that you have collected, or head to you local fabric store and find material that is especially made for patchwork quilts. Thankfully, you do not have to have a lot of leftover material in order to make a patchwork quilt these days, but the basic idea still remains the same. If you decide to make a patchwork quilt, you may think about giving one away as a wedding present, since this is quite a popular thing to do.
