When one of your close friends or family members comes up with the big announcement that a baby is on the way, don’t wait until the last minute to find a perfect shower gift. While it’s true that there are plenty of items that the new parents will need, every baby also needs a keepsake of their infancy, and baby quilts are an excellent way to provide the parents with something useful as well as something that the child can cherish later in life. To make sure that your baby quilt stands the test of time, you will want to stay away from recent gaudy trends that involved putting the baby’s picture on the quilts. For one thing, it’s impossible to put a baby’s picture on the quilt for the baby shower. But putting a picture on a quilt isn’t the best way to make your quilt a timeless memento. The idea is to have a quilt that is usable, but also realize that it may be something that the child will eventually want to give to his or her own children too. For heirloom pieces, you want to go with a classic look, not a dated one. It is okay, and even a good idea, to include a baby’s name and birth date, as well as other important information. Think about what you would be willing to display around your home when designing the quilt. Baby quilts do best with soft pastels; you will want to stay away from bold, bright colors and patterns. The purpose of the quilt is to be soothing, not stimulating. You will also want to choose simple designs so that your quilt doesn’t have a cluttered and overpowering effect. Baby quilts should be between 28 and 70 squares, and generally you should select fabrics that are 100% cotton because of the softness and the fact that they are less likely to irritate a baby’s skin. Your gift will be priceless and unique, and will stand the test of time. |
