Whether or not you know how to quilt yourself, if you know just a bit about different quilting styles, you can easily determine the type of style that you prefer. As with most quilting techniques, Hawaiian quilts are quite distinctive, and these quilts are also extremely interesting. Hawaiian quilts are not too hard to find today, but antique Hawaiian quilts remain a large collector’s item. Hawaiian quilts are not usually pieced together, but they still give off the appearance of a quilt that has been crafted for quite awhile. Instead of merely patching many pieces of fabric together, Hawaiian quilts are generally one large piece. These quilts are made from a piece of folded fabric that is then stitched. Usually, Hawaiian quilts depict some sort of floral motif, and most Hawaiian quilts showcase large designs set off by a white background. Although Hawaiian quilts are stunning to look at, these quilts once served a purpose as well. Original Hawaiian quilts were made as a form of “kapa moe,” which served as a bed cover for indigenous people. Traditionally, “kapa” was taken from the inner bark of trees, felted, dyed, and then turned into a quilt. Some people believe that quilting may have also come from missionaries during the 1820s that traveled to Hawaii in order to teach the world of God – and to quilt. Although kapa provide the original Hawaiian quilt material, today’s Hawaiian quilts are made from imported materials only. Hawaiian quilts are often sought after by antique collectors, and these quilts are really something quite special. |
