Ralli Quilting

There is a style of quilting that has been in the works for hundreds of years now, and this type of quilting is most popular throughout Pakistan and Western India. Ralli quilters produce beautiful patchwork quilts that are often unmatched in quality and craftsmanship. The North American world has just recently begun to recognize the unique quilting style that is Ralli, but those that come across this quilting method often have a difficult time turning away from it.

Ralli is a mish mash of colors, fine threads, and (upon occasion) delicately woven silks. Ralli quilts can be crafted into pillows, blankets, throws, and even table runners, which makes this particular pattern all the more intriguing. All Ralli pieces are hand stitched, and most of these quilts come directly from India. Perhaps the most interesting thing about a Ralli quilt is that all of these quilts are purposely different from one another.

As women sit and quilt in small villages throughout India, their hands begin to weave certain tales and stories that have otherwise gone untold. This is the sole reason why every Ralli quilt portrays a different story or lesson, and in order to recognize this story you must know a bit about Indian folklore. Those that grow up within the Indian culture will immediately be able to recognize the symbolic importance of certain flowers, trees, and animals that can be found within a Ralli quilt, which is why all Ralli quilts are made from patchworked scenes. Some quilting retreats throughout North America have begun to teach the ancient Ralli methods, and this form of quilting is certainly worth looking into.
