Hand piecing a quilt can be very rewarding, and while many people opt to use sewing machines, hand piecing is really where quilting began. To hand piece a quilt, you will need to take a bit more time than you would while using a machine, but with careful attention to detail anyone can learn how to hand quilt. To start, match two edges of fabric together, and make sure that the sewing lines are visible only on the “wrong side” of the fabric. Then, place a pin through both pieces of fabric, and secure the pins. Next, thread a needle through both pieces of fabric at the corners, and secure the fabrics in place with a simple backstitch, or two. After you have secured the fabric, simply work the needle in and out of the fabric until the seam line has been completed. Once each seam line has been followed, remove the pins and begin again. If you want to join many pieces of quilting together, simply repeat the above process numerous times using various pieces of fabric. Hand piercing is really a matter of lining up the seam lines; making sure that you know how to create a regular backstitch; and being careful not to veer outside of the lines. Once you begin to hand pierce a few pieces of fabric, this method of quilting will really become very easy. Although hand quilted quilts take a much longer time to produce, you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your quilt was really done by your hand alone. |
